I am a retired New Mexico Agriculture Education teacher from Southeastern New Mexico. I followed that career with 15 years at New Mexico State University as the Secondary Agriculture Education State Supervisor for total of 44 years in education. I built knives off and on during that time but after retiring 8 years ago I decided to open the Zia Knives Custom Knife business. I thoroughly enjoyed by career in education but being able to create different types of knives has been equally as rewarding for me.
I construct both fixed blade, liner lock and slip joint folding knives employing several different techniques within the Zia Knives shop. I do not use pre-cut knife blanks, guards, or pins. I am proud to say everything is custom-made. Tapered shanks, hollow grinds and flat grinds are techniques employed on a variety of metals which include stainless-steels, high carbon tool steel, saw blades, railroad spikes, hoof rasps and files.
The handle materials include numerous woods from around the world such as Purple Heart, Bloodwood, Ebony, Padauk and Coffee Wood. I stabilize and dye all handle materials as needed. The current inventory includes nearly fifty different varieties of wood. I also collect deer and elk sheds for use, as well as unique materials such as Cholla cactus and pinecones.
A custom-made sheath is included with each fixed blade knife. To set my knives apart, I also offer hand engraving commonly featuring wildlife, and livestock brand logos. Turquoise and Coral inlay give the knives
a southwestern flare.
The knives in the Zia Knives store may or may not be available due to the fact we participate in a large number of vendor shows throughout the year. Our goal is to build your custom knife without any additional fees. This gives you the opportunity to design your knife to the exact specifications you are needing.
